As part of hospital week festivities,
Lisbon Area Health Services (LAHS) honored one if it’s
longtime physicians for his lifetime dedication to
healthcare. Dr. Lewis was surrounded by his family,
colleagues, and friends as stories and facts of his lengthy
career were shared by Dr. Barbara Sheets Olson and Peggy
Larson, LAHS Administrator.
Dr. Lewis came to Lisbon in the fall of 1950, two years
before the hospital was opened. He worked out of a clinic
that was located behind the Bohlken Hardware store. He also
did many house calls. When the doors of the hospital opened
in February of 1952, Dr. Lewis was named the Assistant Chief
of Staff. In 1954, he established Lisbon Clinic. He
eventually took over the duties of Chief of Staff, and took
this charge for many years. In the mid 1970, he was named
Honorary Chairperson for the building project, this included
enlargement of the hospital and adding a nursing home. At
the dedication of the new hospital, he was Master of
Ceremonies.
In 1987, the clinic merged with Dakota Clinic of Fargo, and
in 1988, Dr. Lewis planned his retirement, only to remain on
“as needed” for a few more years. He served this community
for 38 plus years. |
